MP3 recording of this sermon
Today's First Reading is from The Book of Proverbs beginning at the
8th Chapter and the 22nd Verse (Prov 8:22-31)
The LORD created me at the beginning of his
work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was
set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I
was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with
water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I
was brought forth; before he had made the earth with its fields, or the
first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was
there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he
made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the
deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters
might not
transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the
earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman; and I was daily
his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited
world and delighting in the sons of men.
Today's Song of Praise is taken from Psalm 8: (Ps 8:4-5,6-7,8-9)
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
When I behold your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars which you set in place --
What is man that you should be mindful of him,
or the son of man that you should care for him?
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
You have made him little less than the angels,
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,
putting all things under his feet:
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
All sheep and oxen,
yes, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fishes of the sea,
and whatever swims the paths of the seas.
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
El Salmo Responsorial se toma del Salmo 104 (Ps
8:4-5,6-7,8-9)
R.-
Today's Epistle is from Paul's Letter to the Romans,
beginning at the 5th Chapter, and the 1st Verse (Rom 5:1-5)
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have
obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our
hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in
our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and
endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and
hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured
into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.
+A Reading from the Gospel of John, beginning at the 16th Chapter,
and the 12th Verse (John 16:12-15)
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples:
"I have yet many things to say to you, but you
cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you
into all the truth;
for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he
will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it
to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he
will take what is mine and declare it to you. "
Él me

Trinity Sunday
The First Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity
Sunday, and today's readings reveal various aspects of the Mystery of
the Holy Trinity.
Today's first Reading, from the Book of Proverbs,
has God's Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia in Greek) talking about Her -- for
in the Hebrew, the speaker is definitely feminine -- involvement in
Creation, and Her birth from the earliest time, before all
Creation. "Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the
beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth; when there were no
springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been
shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth; before he had made the earth
with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world."
The figure is also Christ -- Second Person of the
Trinity, of whom the Creed says: "And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only
begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages." St.
John's Gospel says of Him: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
God; all things were made through him, and without him was not
anything made that was made. "
And precisely here is the connection between the
"feminine" Wisdom, and the "masculine" Christ -- she was there
"...when he marked out the foundations of the
earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman; and I was daily
his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited
world and delighting in the sons of men." He was: "born of the Father
before all ages." The Wisdom of the Lord
is contained in the Word of the Lord, and that Word and Lord is the
Second Person of the Blessed Trinity -- Jesus Christ -- "...by whom all
things were made...".
In Today's Epistle, Paul tells the Romans that we
are joined with Jesus -- and know Him -- through the power of the Holy
Spirit.. We saw that Spirit poured out on the Apostles last week at
Pentecost, and from them, it flows through the historic Church to
us. Through Christ, in
turn, we have access to and connection with the Father -- we are made
one with Jesus in the Spirit, and one with the Father in Jesus -- we
participate in the Love and interaction of the ineffable Godhead
through the ordinary daily staples of Bread and Wine, which are
transformed and
lifted up in the Liturgy, to become the Body and Blood of Christ, which
also become intimately part of us through our mouths and stomachs, as
He
likewise becomes joined with our souls.
Jesus speaks of the Spirit in Today's Gospel -- the
One who will come, who will: "...guide you into all truth...",
who will "...take what is mine and declare it unto you..."
So here, in small, we have the Doctrine of the
Trinity -- Father and Creator; eternally-begotten Son -- by whom all
things were made; and eternally emanating Spirit -- the Lord, the
giver of Life. Three very
different Persons, one transcendant God.
And we pray, as every generation of Christians since
the first Pentecost has prayed:
In the
Name of
the Father +
And of the Son
+
And of the
Holy Spirit +
Amen.
